Ferry crossing

We had a great crossing from Wellington to Picton (north to south islands) with great sun, calm waters and fresh breeze. I stayed on top and Linda went below to read her paper! As you approach the south island, it is obvious there is nowhere to land. The ferry goes into a series of sounds to reach a place where a boat can approach. On the way, we saw many cottages only accessible by boat. Great way to limit weekend drop ins. We are amazed at how much money there is on this island. Property is expensive, food is expensive, eating out is ridiculous. About 23,ooo people leave every year for other places (recent census 4.2 mill pop) NZ is trying to get "limited immigration" for "low skilled trades" to make up for the exodus. Life style is a big deal here. Shops close at 4:30, most are closed Sunday, they have other priorities. This comes at a cost and it appears many are prepared to trade life style for bucks elsewhere.
